Saint Raphael is a little-known but beautiful resort on the Mediterranean coast of France, close to the glitzy city of Cannes, and next to the medieval port town of Frejus. Saint Raphael is famous for its natural beauty, opportunities for sport and relaxation, and history. Together with Frejus, Saint Raphael was an important stop on Roman trading routes, and Roman remains can still be found in the area. Much of the old town of Saint Raphael dates from the medieval era, with narrow cobbled streets and plenty of charm. The resort's sandy beach sweeps around a beautiful bay. Opposite the beach is a small rocky island, the Ile D'Or, with a medieval tower that was the inspiration for the Black Tower in The Adventures of Tintin. The bay at Saint Raphael is as gorgeous below the water as it is above. It is a major scuba diving centre, with the Ile D'Or and several local wrecks being interesting dive sites. Above the water, try sailing from the local marina, or just enjoy swimming and sunbathing. Head along the coast a little if you want to explore some empty bays and rocky coves that you might have all to yourself. The Esterel Mountains lie just inland from Saint Raphael, and are criss-crossed with walking and mountain biking tracks, and offer fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. After a day out, head back to the town, enjoy a drink in a sophisticated cocktail bar, or traditional Provencal meal in an atmospheric restaurant. La Corniche d'Or residence has one-star apartments right on the beach, with its own pool.
