Madeira offers a unique irrigation system. This network, called the levada was built throughout the centuries and is now considered as a unique way to discover the island, both by islanders and visitors. There are about 1,500 kilometres of levadas in Madeira, many of them are covering protected areas such as the Madeira Natural Park and the Funchal Ecological Park. The trails are accessible to the whole family with various levels of difficulty.

Nature in Madeira

Madeira boasts an amazing marine reserve with the Marine Nature Reserve of Garajau. It is the perfect place to enjoy scuba diving in turquoise waters and discover fishes such as Dusky Sea Perches. If you want to see the world rarest seal, head to the Desertas Island, last sanctuary in the Atlantic for the monk seal. Bird lovers will enjoy a boat ride in the Selvegens Islands, one of the most amazing bird sanctuary in the area that will also give you the opportunity to sea whales, dolphins or turtles.
