Built in 1627 and rebuilt by Vauban, it has long protected the port and bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Open to the public, it offers a pleasant walk along its ramparts and reveals an exceptional panorama of the bay, mountains and ocean.

This is a very well maintained site with very pleasant and helpful staff. The location suited us with good safe parking and a bus stop outside the gate. Otherwise It was a pleasant 10 minute walk into Ciboure village or 20 minute walk to St Jean de Luz bus terminus/railway ...station and beach. It is an excellent location to see a wonderful area including Ciboure, St Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Biarritz, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Lourdes, and some lovely villages within half an hour’s drive or on the various bus routes. A perfect location for a local ‘foodie’/beach/cultural experience in this lovely Basque region.
