      Saint-Elme citadel

      Built by the Duke of Savoy to protect the county of Nice from invaders, the citadel is part of a three hectare complex which is classified as historical monument. It houses the city hall, the Goetz-Volti and Boumeester museums and the Roux collection.

      Discover the rose garden and the garden of Echauguette and admire the sixteenth-century architecture in which where nature blends seamlessly with the various elements.

      In the seaside town of Villefranche sur Mer, you will find a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen. Built in the fourteenth century, it served as a place of worship but also as a reserve for fishing equipment.

      In 1957, writer and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, who was also a painter, decided to redecorate the entire chapel. Your visit will enable you to discover his paintings: passages from the life of Saint Peter, the chandeliers of the Apocalypse and local scenes that pay homage to Saintes Maries de la Mer and Les Demoiselles de Villefranche. What better way to understand the history of the city and the role of fishermen than by visiting this beautiful chapel?

      Jardins de la Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

      The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild gardens offer visitors a pleasant place to stroll in the eight areas that compose these gardens.

      The walk through the French style gardens formed in the shape of a boat, features romantic waterfalls and ponds, as well as the Temple of Love. The tour continues past the Spanish and Florentine gardens. The former is a covered patio and the latter boasts flowering water hyacinths.

      In the Provencal and exotic gardens, the cacti and narrow paths transport strollers on a voyage that extends into the lapidary and Japanese gardens. Finally, the numerous varieties of roses blooming in the rose garden reveal their intoxicating scents, best appreciated from May to July.

      The museum today offers a comprehensive overview of the work of painter Marc Chagall. Chagall’s work is marked by a profound spirituality, and the museum places it in the broader context of the history of contemporary art.
