At dawn on June 6th, 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy, facing enemy fire. In what has become known as "The Longest Day", thousands of soldiers, mostly Americans paid a high price for this turning point in World War II. The beach at Colleville-sur-Mer was renamed Omaha Beach in honour of the operation that made it one of the strategic landing points.
Today, the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach celebrates the memory of the soldiers and civilians who died for freedom. Inaugurated in 2007, an interpretive centre complements the visit to the cemetery and pays tribute to the sacrifice of Second World War veterans.

Like Utah Beach, Omaha Beach was part of the American landing zone.
Subsequently dubbed "Bloody Omaha", the beach is notorious for having seen the highest casualties of the Normandy Landings operation: 3881 American soldiers were killed, wounded or went missing on June 6th 1944 at Omaha Beach.
