      Saint-Elme citadel

      Built by the Duke of Savoy to protect the county of Nice from invaders, the citadel is part of a three hectare complex which is classified as historical monument. It houses the city hall, the Goetz-Volti and Boumeester museums and the Roux collection.

      Discover the rose garden and the garden of Echauguette and admire the sixteenth-century architecture in which where nature blends seamlessly with the various elements.

      You will spot works of art such as the bust of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna along the way as you enjoy a walk around this beautiful property.

      In the seaside town of Villefranche sur Mer, you will find a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen. Built in the fourteenth century, it served as a place of worship but also as a reserve for fishing equipment.

      In 1957, writer and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, who was also a painter, decided to redecorate the entire chapel. Your visit will enable you to discover his paintings: passages from the life of Saint Peter, the chandeliers of the Apocalypse and local scenes that pay homage to Saintes Maries de la Mer and Les Demoiselles de Villefranche. What better way to understand the history of the city and the role of fishermen than by visiting this beautiful chapel?

      Jardins de la Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

      The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild gardens offer visitors a pleasant place to stroll in the eight areas that compose these gardens.

      The walk through the French style gardens formed in the shape of a boat, features romantic waterfalls and ponds, as well as the Temple of Love. The tour continues past the Spanish and Florentine gardens. The former is a covered patio and the latter boasts flowering water hyacinths.

      In the Provencal and exotic gardens, the cacti and narrow paths transport strollers on a voyage that extends into the lapidary and Japanese gardens. Finally, the numerous varieties of roses blooming in the rose garden reveal their intoxicating scents, best appreciated from May to July.

      Founded in 1966 when the artist donated his Biblical Message (a vast cycle of seventeen paintings based on the book of Genesis), the Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall or Marc Chagall Museum in Nice is one of three national museums in the department (along with the Picasso Museum in Vallauris and the Fernand Léger Museum in Biot).

      The museum today offers a comprehensive overview of the work of painter Marc Chagall. Chagall’s work is marked by a profound spirituality, and the museum places it in the broader context of the history of contemporary art.

      Located on the Promenade Des Arts in Nice, the national theatre presents numerous shows as part of its cultural programme. The establishment has two theatres: the salle Pierre Brasseur, which seats 963 and the salle Michel Simon, with 318 seats.
