The gothic Basilica of St. Mary of Castello d'Empuries has the structure and dimensions of a cathedral. In fact, the counts of Empuries tried unsuccessfully several times to have the basilica classified as a cathedral. One of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Catalonia, construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria started in the 13th century and continued throughout the 14th century to the early 15th. Inside the basilica, you will find a beautiful, 15th century alabaster altarpiece, two sarcophagi of the counts, the 18th century dels Dolors altarpiece and a 19th century organ.
Making use of the ruins of the former Figueres theatre destroyed in 1939, the Dali Theatre-Museum resembles the painter himself - whimsical and fantastic.
The theatre served as a testing ground for the Dali who was a native of Figueres, the town where he eventually died on January 23rd 1939.
Officially inaugurated in 1939, the site allows visitors to view many Dali works such as Port Alguer, Apotheosis of the Dollar or the Breadbasket.
Dali also painted whole rooms, rendering the space a work of art in itself.

Even though the castle remains unfinished, its architectural beauty is incomparable. Also admire the majestic building's 13-metre high walls, moats and the castle's four cylindrical towers.
