The amphitheatre in Pula is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four fully preserved side towers. Built in 27 BC, it is one of the six largest Roman arenas still existing in the world. The amphitheatre ceased to be used in the 5th century when the emperor Honorius banned gladiator fights. The local population then plundered it of its stones before this became forbidden in the thirteenth century. In 1932, Pula's amphitheatre was adapted for theatre, military ceremonies and public meetings.
Dating from the 18th century, the Church of St. Euphemia in Rovinj was built in Italian baroque style. The facade is more recent, dating from the 19th century. On top of the bell tower, which was modeled on St Mark's in Venice, you'll see a copper statue of St. Euphemia, the patron saint of Rovinj. Inside is her marble sarcophagus. There's also a marble altarpiece, a statue of St George and the Dragon and several paintings by Giovanni Contarini.
