Domaine de Vizille, gardens and parkland
It was in the château de Vizille that the touchpapers of the French Revolution were lit, on the 21 July 1788, the day of the assembly of the Three orders of the Dauphiné. It was therefore natural that the château should house a museum dedicated to this troubled, crucial and decisive period in French history.
One hundred hectares of gardens are criss-crossed by canals all around the château. This garden is officially labelled a "remarkable garden". Walkers can observe a floral fireworks display, an explosion of colour and scent, particularly in the rose garden.
The flora is accompanied by fauna, as there is an animal park where magnificent deer and birds live, the ancestors of which were hunted by the Duke of Lesdiguières.
Museum of Grenoble
Once situated inside a very beautiful building on the 19th century Place Verdun , the Musée de Grenoble , located today in the heart of the city, is an inspirational example of contemporary museum architecture. But it is the collections, especially rich in 20th century art , which make it one of the leading museums in France .
Around the outside of the museum is a collection of rare sculptures which are open daily to the public. Inaugurated in 1988 , this sculpture park just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Within the museum, temporary exhibitions are organised each year.
