  • Fonserannes Lock

    Fonserannes Lock

In Béziers you'll find the Canal du Midi's feat of engineering: the Nine Locks of Fonseranes. This is a 312m-long water staircase which allows barges and boats to cross a 25-metre gradient.

At the time, this was an extraordinary technological feat and was carried out by Paul Riquet in homage to his hometown.

The Nine Locks of Fonseraneses are the third most visited tourist attraction in Languedoc-Roussillon, after the Cité de Carcassonne and the Pont du Gard.
On average, eight thousand boats pass through the Nine Locks and 300,000 visitors come to admire them each year.
