Situated on the slopes of the Pyrenees, visitors can admire the beautiful Cistercian Abbey of Escaladieu. This Romanesque building, built in 1142, served as the final resting place of the Counts of Bigorre. On the road to Compostela, it experienced a boom period and became an important place of worship.
In accordance with the Cistercian project, the abbey followed what was known as the "Bernardin" plan. Thus, the monks from noble families and monks of peasant stock were separated in the buildings.
It's especially pleasant to walk in the cloister in summertime and soak up the meditative ambiance.
The Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa is a Benedictine monastery built at the foot of Mount Canigou. You can visit this rare religious monument, surrounded by orchards, which reflects the history of Catalonia in the Middle Ages.
This spiritual place which is still is use today, also draws visitors for its fine architecture. The southern tower is probably the most notable element of the complex. But continue your visit into the cloister, which is one of the largest in the region.
