What to do in Koutouloufari

All resort activities and events Koutouloufari

The Galaxy Villas residence is located in the heart of Koutouloufari, a small, picturesque village just 27 km from Heraklion airport.

- Heraklion, the capital: the town is surrounded by Venetian fortifications, perfect for walks - the view is worth the effort.
Worth seeing: The Venetian fort on the port provides a wonderful view over the bay; the archaeological museum offers a chance to explore the Minoan civilisation and Crete through the ages; the museum of icons and sacred objects is housed in a Byzantine church, and includes in particular the works of Damaskinos, who was the teacher of the great Cretan artist, El Greco. El Greco Park is a peaceful spot, and just a step or two away you'll find the Morosini fountain in a picturesque neighbourhood, and lastly, the Agios Minas Cathedral.

- Knossos Palace: This is the largest of the four Minoan palaces and above all a major archaeological site, bearing witness to the grandeur and refinement of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilisations.

- The village of Zaros with its lake nestling in the mountains: Get away from it all and savour the relaxed way of life in this small town surrounded by the mountains of the Heraklion region. Zaros is perfect for hikers and walkers. Votomos lake is the ideal place for a stroll and the small bars and tavernas will entirely satisfy those who prefer a leisurely pace of life. Be sure to sample the famous trout from the surrounding fish farms.
Also well worth a visit: Vrondissi monastery and the Rouvas gorge.

- Phaistos Palace: The second biggest Minoan site on the island of Crete after Knossos.

- The archaeological site of Gortyn with its Roman ruins, where you can also see the remains of the Agios Titos church, and the "Gortyn Code" on family law, engraved on a wall.

- The town and old port of Hersonissos.

- Malia, a seaside resort boasting magnificent beaches and a charming little village. There are night clubs, bars, tavernas and water sports on offer, as well as the archaeological site of the Palace of Malia (one of Crete's Minoan palaces, with a central courtyard, royal apartments, storage rooms and staterooms).

- Matala: the village, a mecca for hippies in the 1960s and 70s, who found refuge in the caves and caverns (open to visits during the day); the coast and bay.

- Samaria Gorge: This site is surrounded by Crete's most stunning countryside. The gorge is the longest in Europe, extending over nearly sixteen kilometres. It is a protected national park, in particular so as to preserve a typically Cretan animal species, the kri kri.
