The first construction of its kind in the world and one of the largest, the Odeillo Solar Furnace is located in Font-Romeu. Commissioned in 1970, this huge oven features a large concave mirror composed of 9,130 facets of 50cm aside.
The light penetrates, after being reflected on the 63 mirror planes facing it, enabling the furnace to reach temperatures in excess of 3000 °. These 63 mirrors are called Heliostats and each surface is 45m ². Like glass sunflowers, they are oriented to follow the sun's path. The tour allows visitors to witness an impressive demonstration in collaboration with the sun.
Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Mont-Louis Citadel is one of Vauban's most remarkable fortifications. Mont-Louis also has the distinction of being the highest fortified town in France, as it is located at an altitude of 1,600m.
Between the walls of the citadel lies the Saint-Louis church, built between 1733 and 1737, and the convicts' prison built by Vauban. Visitors can extend the tour with a walk around the village to take in the local shops. Hikers will also be delighted with the mountain trails that lead through Pyrenean landscapes.
