Omaha-Beach American Cemetery in Colleville - Visitor Centre

At dawn on June 6th, 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy, facing enemy fire. In what has become known as "The Longest Day", thousands of soldiers, mostly Americans paid a high price for this turning point in World War II. The beach at Colleville-sur-Mer was renamed Omaha Beach in honour of the operation that made it one of the strategic landing points.

Today, the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach celebrates the memory of the soldiers and civilians who died for freedom. Inaugurated in 2007, an interpretive centre complements the visit to the cemetery and pays tribute to the sacrifice of Second World War veterans.

      Omaha Beach

At 6:30 am on June 6th 1944, Allied forces, under the command of General Eisenhower, landed on the Normandy beaches. At Omaha Beach, the 29th Division, the 1st division and 2nd division were responsible for taking the beach from the Germans. Of the five landing beaches, Omaha Beach is probably the most famous and bloodiest, earning it the nickname "Bloody Omaha".

Nowadays, the beach has regained its old character, but remains custodian to the memory of the 3,881 American soldiers who gave their lives to liberate France on June 6th, 1944.
