Off for a few days in the Ariège Pyrenees and want to make the most of the environment to indulge in some activities? Then head for the Bureau des Guides – they’ll be able to guide you. Whether you want to go snowshoeing, mountain biking, skiing, caving or mountaineering, you’ll find everything you’re looking for. Activities take place according to your level of ability, so even the very young can enjoy what’s on offer.
A small ski resort nestled among the pine trees a fifteen minute drive from Ax-les-Thermes, Ascou-Pailhères offers a ski area with 20km of pistes. You will find 14 marked pistes with 5 ski lifts and 1 chairlift.
The snow is always abundant and of excellent quality. The beginners' slope, the "Clairière", is set slightly apart, with its own button lift, allowing children and beginners to gain confidence. Higher up, the budding club skiers can train on more difficult slopes!
In a cosy and welcoming atmosphere, tiny ones can enjoy snow games and play on the tobogganing track away from the pistes, for parents' peace of mind.
Easy slopes allow young skiers to learn and progress with ease. Other, steeper slopes allow seasoned skiers to test themselves far from the crowds of the larger resorts.
Whatever your current level and however keen you are to improve, the instructors at the French ski school, ESF, will help you achieve your goals. They are enthusiastic and dedicated and they know the ski area inside out.
Take advantage of their knowledge while you are here and join a group class or have an individual lesson. You can try skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, handiski, biathlon, snowshoe walks or ski hikes.
Kids from 3 years are welcome at ski school too - let your little ones learn while you enjoy the slopes child-free for a few hours.
The parc de la Maison des loups, or the "park of the house of wolves" comprises an area of some seven hectares dedicated to this much maligned animal which is integral part of our ecosystem. Each year more than 40,000 visitors come to discover the wolves living here in semi freedom. There are forty species of wolf in the world, and the Maison des Loups is home to five of these, including the European wolf and the Arctic wolf.
You can watch the wolves being fed, and can even move among the pack without risk, thanks to the large glass viewing tunnel. And now the farm run by Mr. Seguin also allows you to get up close to dwarf goats, sheep and poultry which you can pet in complete safety.
